ICHTHYS House

ICHTHYS House hosts a wide variety of programs throughout the year.

The central, continuing ministry of the House is a half hour of quiet worship every evening at 9:30 P.M., 365 days a year. This is followed by food and fellowship for those who want to stay, often continuing until 11:00 or later. This is now in its 31st consecutive year. Attenders come from Earlham College, Earlham School of Religion, Bethany Theological Seminary and the Richmond community, as well as visitors from out of town.

Special activities during the year include:
  • Days of Silence and Solitude, which are increasingly requested and responded to. These times are for quiet prayer, reading, reflection, writing or meditation.
  • Community Dinners, with home-made bread from Clyde's trusty bread machine, Moses
  • Opportunities to visit and eat with special guests; past guests have included Henri Nouwen, George Marsden, Elton Trueblood, Philip Berrigan, Mary Cosby, Douglas and Dorothy Steere, Madeleine L'Engle, and visitors from the Bruderhof and Taize communities
  • Open Houses at the beginning of the academic year and at other times
  • Pitch-in meals of the Earlham Christian Fellowship and Earlham Young Friends. Other groups also meet at the House from time to time
  • Occasional retreats to the Abbey of Gethsemani and other retreat centers
The House offers a large library of books and other printed materials, music recordings, games, a piano and guitar, fireplace, porch swing, comfortable furniture, media equipment, computer for net surfing, and, always, snacks! It is a meeting place, a home-away-from-home, and a drop-in center. Students and others stop by to visit, to borrow books and recordings, to use the telephone, to take naps. . .
